SJCOE HOSTS 2013 CALIFORNIA STATE ELEMENTARY SPELLING BEE

Over 300 people gathered for the California State Elementary Spelling Bee hosted by San Joaquin County Office of Education for the third consecutive year on April 20. Sixty fourth- through sixth-grade students from 30 counties in California who have been certified as county champions by their County Superintendents of Schools competed for the championship.

After 13 rounds, Sahir Qureshi, ten-year-old fifth-grader from Alameda County was named the 2013 California State Spelling Bee Champion. His winning word was “prosciutto” (Definition: Dry-cured spiced ham).

Jillian Raffert, San Joaquin County
Anne Burdette, Santa Barbara County
Shakson Isaac, Riverside County
Mridini Vijay, Placer County
Aditya Mishra, Placer County
Alex Topp, Solano County
Nicolas Keys, Amador County

Two San Joaquin County students–Jill Rafert, sixth-grader at Annunciation School and Jack Ford, sixth-grader at Ripon Elementary in Ripon Unified School District, represented San Joaquin County. Rafert was one of the 7 finalists.

The 2013 California State Elementary Spelling Bee was sponsored by Grand Canyon University (GCU). Courtesy of GCU, all participants received an iPod shuffle inside a Spelling Bee backpack and Qureshi was awarded an iPad. For more information about GCU, visit http://www.gcu.edu/.
