“25 Years of Living Green in San Joaquin” is the theme of this year’s annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 21st, from 10 am to 4 pm at Victory Park, behind Haggin Museum in Stockton. This is the premiere environmental event in San Joaquin County, and as always, the focus of the day long festival is to educate local residents about taking care of our environment. It is a fun day for kids and families, and best of all, admission to the event is free.
The Festival will have an array of informative, interactive booths, demos, displays and exhibits. Local area schools will to be teaching how to better take care of our Earth with a variety of hands-on activities, and environmental organizations will provide education about the important issues and how we can make a difference. Community agencies will help us live a healthier, more positive life, and green businesses will assist attendees in making changes to their home and workplace. Over 100 vendors will border the oak trees and cross the grass field at Victory Park, including purveyors of some great food.
As always, the Earth Day Festival will have an exciting way to engage young people in learning about ways to help the environment. Passport Earth flyers can be printed at the event website or picked up at the event. Collect stamps at booths throughout the Festival, look for answers to questions about protecting our planet and enter to win prizes at the Passport Earth booth.
Warm-up for the day at 10 am with Yoga on the park green. Join the hundreds of cyclists who will decorate their bikes and cycle around the neighborhood as part of the Family Fun Bike Ride and Parade. Biking registration is at 10:30 am. After the ride, leave your bike in a safe, secure bike corral manned by the San Joaquin Bike Coalition.
A full schedule of entertainment starts at 11 am, featuring local area bands and dance groups. This year’s music line-up includes the Darien Field Band, Central Latino All-Star Band, Mojo Swingers, and Longtime. Between music acts, see Stockton Pow Wow dancers, drummers and singers, and Delta Fusion’s giant puppets and pageantry. Or participate as a drummer in the Drum Circle that traditionally closes the Festival at 4 pm on a percussive high note.
This year’s event is a partnership of the Peace & Justice Network, City of Stockton, University of the Pacific, San Joaquin County Office of Education, Mayaco Marketing & Internet and the San Joaquin Bike Coalition.
Volunteers are still needed to assist before and on the day of the event, so see the Festival website for more information. Be actively involved in San Joaquin County’s Earth Day activities and join the 10,000 plus who will gather at our local event corresponding with environmental events taking place all over the country.
